Dear Carol,
in November of 2006 I had the luck to have a 6-day horseback
riding with you. I was fascinated by the trip around the
Nirihuau valley and so I decided to make such trips back
home in Germany too.
It started in April of 2007, together with friends I
organised my first 3-day horse trekking in the northern
area of Munich. On one hand it was easy, because civilisation
was always available, on the other hand civilisation meant
a lot of restrictions and regulations. But it all worked
and at the end it was said, I have to do the same again.
Due to this I organised different 1-day to 3-day trips
in the following years.
In the second step I wanted to know, whats possible
with a horse in a densly populated country like Bavaria.
In August 2009 I started and rode alone 233 kilometers
from Munich to the Bavarian Forest near Passau. It was
such a fantastic trip, that I did it again this year in
May. I know, for you and your texanian friends this is
nothing remarkable, but in Germany still a lot of people
believe, that something like this makes too great demands
for the horse.
Also in 2009 after a one week course I was examinated
and approved as guide für horse trekking
by the national riding organisation of Germany (its a
request of the assurances when you are guiding a group,
because horse riding is classified as a dangerous sport).
In 2010 an 2011 I organised three day trips for the local
riding organisation. This are combined trips, one group
riding the horses and the other group riding on bycicles
(often there are partners or parents, who are not riding,
but with this combination both parties can accompanie
each others). On such a three day trip we meanwhile make
up to 120 riding kilometers, which means per day about
35 to 45 kilometers.
At the moment Im documentating riding routes in
Upper Bavaria, over 500 kilometers are meanwhile available.
Most of the recconaissance of the routes is done with
my horse Geronimo, due to this he has to run a lot (it
is meanwhile often said, that long ago he has overrun
his lifespan kilometers).
Nevertheless, this all is my hobby, not my job (I earn
my money still as a real estate manager). I think, now
you can estimate, how you have changed my live with your
cabalgata. There are few peoples who had such an influence
on my way of live. Five years later due to this a lot
of thanks to you, Carol and all the best wishes to you,
your friends and your horses.
Mit freundlichen Grüßen

the menue Tages- und Wanderritte a program
and announcements of the trip. Its all in German,
but I think your Swiss neighbour will support you.
You see, I remember a lot of this few days in Argentina,
first because it was so impressive and second because
I wrote a book about my Argentin Adventure
with more than 100 pages text. This writing had the advantage,
that I did the trip a second time. Also I documentated
the whole ride with google earth very exactly. With this
work I learned the reproducable documentation of riding
routes. This knowledge now is used for my trekking trips
and the route documentation of riding routes in Upper
Bavaria. Additional, in appendix to my adventures
I described all your equipment, we had on the trip. This
information later helped me a lot to compose my own tekking
equipment. (You may remember, that on the evening of the
first riding day the batteries of my camera got low, so
I was not able to take pictures, but I replaced the pictures
by written notices during the ride, which were the bedrock
of my book).
I hope, this informations will help you.

Dear Carol,
I will conserv those two days for a long times in my
memory. I was so sad to leave Patagonia, and when we were
in the fly I so all the places we were with you and also
your little shed and the coral. That will be my last view
of Patagonia and my best things to renember, Thanks a
lot for all that, and it was a pleasure for me to ride
also with Jean-Claude. So unusual! I will try to find
the book, but I have such a lot of questions, that was
too short! Bye Carol and hope to see you soon once more.

Hi Carol
Everything ok in Bariloche? How's Fuchi?
I am back in Switzerland now and - finally - am writing
to you: I would like to thank you once more: it really
was a great experience and I spent 3 perfect days with
you and of course Fuchi!! I really hope, I come back to
Argentina soon... If I know more details, I'll contact
you again and maybe we can go for a daytrip! And if Fuchi
is still there...it's no question which horse I would
choose ;-)
I wish you only the best!
Greetings from Switzerland

Thanks so very much for our recent horseback
riding adventure. (March 25th, 2009)
We were really happy about how our little girl fared
with the adventure. The horse you guys picked for her
was a superstar, as were those we rode, each very suited
to their rider's experience level.
Your ranch is fantastically beautiful, a real treasure
of this earth !
We've put our GPS track and a few photos from the
trip up here. Let us know if that's ok or if you'd like
to see it changed in any way.
regards and thanks again

Dear Magnus Rehnberg
My name is Heike Schiele and I was one of the riders on
the Cabalgata you were meant to join in Bariloche. So
I couldn't really help but learn about your misfortune.
I asked Carol to give me your e-mail address so that I
could drop you a line. I hope you don't mind - but I just
felt very sorry for you and our inability to communicate
the hold up, since there is no cell phone reception in
the backcountry. I had a similar experience recently in
Chile, so I can guess what anguish you must have lived
through.
This was my third ride with Carol - I did my first one
three years ago for nine days and was so happy with the
ride that I came back last year and once again this year.
The rides are quite a special experience and I hope that
you might be able to do one in the future.
I love the rugged countryside, the willing and capable
horses and the hospitality one experiences in this country.
It is an experience that I can't compare easily with anything
I have ever experienced in Europe or New Zealand where
I live nowadays.
I hope the incident has not spoilt your trip too much,
Yours sincerely
Heike Schiele
Hi Carol
Just a little message from us to say again what a
fantastic trip we had with you. We felt so fortunate to
be able to go high up into the mountains and to experience
a pack trip and your horses were brilliant at looking
after us and being entirely trustworthy and the trip far
exceeded any of our hopes expectations. A special thank
you goes to you, Alicia, Antonacio and Ailine too for
looking after us so well throughout.
Hope you have a great rest of the season.
Best wishes
Ollie & Georgia
Carol,
Angela and I wanted to thank you for a wonderful trip
on March 6th. Alicia and Guillermo were wonderful and
we had a great time. We will be sure to tell our friends
about you should they find themselves in Bariloche.
All best, Steve and Angela
.... it was great as all the other rides I had with you.
thanks a lot for them. I have only two weeks left here
in south America and I have to get my friends to Santiago
for their flight and then me for mine. but I will definetely
come back again and for sure wont miss riding with you
again too. probably wont be able to do it next season,
but i want to come after two years.
thanks a lot again, the four days ride has been the
best experience during my five months here. and the last
ride was a highlight for my friends too.
see you in the future
bye and sending regards from my friends

Dear Carol,
I arrived back in the US a couple of days ago, all
safe and sound.
Thank you for the wonderful and relaxing time I had
with you. It was a lot more than horseback riding ---
the experience began with you picking me up in your Land
Rover at the hotel, the drive out, the camp, the cooking,
the scenery, the isolation, the gauchos, etc, etc. There
are Land Rovers, and there are Land Rovers. And then there
is Carol Jone's Land Rover. I hope you manage to keep
it running for another ten years or more.
Now, I have a serious question for you --- Would you
consider the possibility of me doing a four or five day
trip, where I can hike and camp alone on your estancia
for three days, and just ride for about two days? Nothing
certain yet, just want to explore options about what I
might be doing in the future.
My best wishes to Aileen, Jarred, and big Aileen.
Regards,
Khai

hi Carol,
I hope your trip yesterday went well. I just wanted to
write and thank you again for an unforgettable few days;
even with the rain, it was really wonderful, and I really
appreciate you hospitality. IT should go without saying
that I´d be happy to show you and your family around
New York one day if you plan to come (though probably
not on horseback).
much thanks,
David

Dear Carol
I have arrived in Buenos Aires on my way to Germany and
if it wasn´t for the last little bit of Patagonian
dirt under my fingernails and a pile of dusty clothes
I would think that I had a very nice dream about horse
riding.
The ride was out of this world and I would like to thank
you and your team for making it happen. It will take a
few more days to digest all we saw and experienced. I
can´t wait for my fotos to be developed to check
that it really happened.
I hope you´ll enjoy your break before the next tour.
Take care and all the best,
Heike

Sept. 1987
(...) After dinner, we drink the countryman's "mate",
a tea sucked up with a silver straw from a little gourd,
and then we retire, Carol and I to our respective sleeping
bags and tents, Cornelio to his blankets spread on the
ground. He says he does not like the idea of sleeping
in a bag.
We are lucky with the weather. It could easily rain at
this time of the year, but it snows instead, just once.
We are climbing a ridge, the horses delicately picking
their way through the loose rocks, when the snow blusters
up and covers the mountain. Gaining altitude, I take extreme
care always to keep Cornelio's black poncho in my sight.
It is during this snow that I have the impression that
there is some purpose to all this, besides a trek for
a trek's sake. Perhaps we are chasing something, or, better
yet, being chased. In a moment, I recognize the feeling-of
being 13 years old and reading J.R.R. Tolkien, of following
an improbable band of questers as they escape from some
beautiful and terrible forest, only to land in a river,
or on a mountain more beautiful and terrible still for
being closer to the object of the quest. And the object
was what? A ring, I suppose. The only part I really remember
is the urgency of my reading; likewise is the urgency
of staying close behind Carol, Our lady of patagonia,
and Cornelio the dark, as we struggle to the ridge (...)
